Whatever may have prompted the name of this band, it was certainly not
a lack of artistic inspiration. With both their grandfather and father
famous for a body of literary work translated into several languages,
it is safe to say that creativity runs in the family of Julia and Joni
Alicka, the original founding members of "THE ALICKA PROBLEM", who were
born and raised in Tirana/Albania. The siblings moved to Germany in
their late teens to study at various universities, but also brought with
them a deep passion for music. In 2010, "The Alicka Problem" was formed
as a trio in Mannheim/Germany, and currently performs with the following
line-up: Julia Alicka (bass, voc.), Joni Alicka (guit.,voc.) and Daniel
Mudrack (drums, perc.).
Make no mistake, this is not your run-of-the-mill independent rock trio,
as these barren facts might suggest: stylistically, the band unites the
most varied influences and integrates elements from vastly heterogeneous
genres and individual musical preferences, like the psychedelic sound
experiments of the early Pink Floyd, or the band Spiritualized, the free
jazz of John Coltrane, as well as the virtues of classic songwriting
in the tradition of Bob Dylan. The result of this seemingly impossible
project is a uniquely rich sound propelled by an unswerving appetite
for exploring new "soundscapes", an enormous courage to experiment and
combine the seemingly most disparate elements, in short: by an overwhelming
artistic wanderlust and curiosity. The versed critic Georg
Spindler puts it as follows: "An incredibly band, which apart from all
of its originality also admits to being indebted to a long tradition of
rock avant-garde... the music of The Alicka Problem receives its electrifying
tension from conflicting sound consistencies. It uses the stark
contrast between the powerful, punky bass riffs and drum patterns on one
hand, the flowing and tripping sound streams of the electric guitar and
voice on the other. At the same time disturbing and fascinating, their
experimental rock oscillates between fragility and furor, aggressiveness
and vulnerabilty, intimacy and ecstasis."
